Executive Board
President
Blue & White magazine is a monthly features publication that is looking to expand its on-campus presence and branding potential. Thus, the magazine seeks a visionary for re-branding the magazine. Blue & White is looking for a new Administrative Executive. A qualified candidate will be self-driven, self-initiated, organized and a natural leader. Potential candidates should have experience with either Public Relations, Fundraising efforts or management aspects in Business fields. Submit a cover letter and resume to apply.
Creative Director
The creative director of B&W is responsible for placing content and designing the back half of the magazine, including the back cover. He/she is also in charge of overseeing (and sometimes participating in) the design of the feature spreads by the staff designers. It is also the responsibility of the creative director to prepare the magazine for packaging, send it to the printers and correspond with the printing service about any modifications that need to be made thereafter. The creative director must attend editor meetings and coordinate meetings with the design staff, as well as help assign them their pages. The creative director of B&W works side by side with the Art Director; they can divide their work as they please. The main skills needed are knowledge of InDesign, a keen design eye and the ability to manage and work with other people. Submit a cover letter, resume, and two design samples to apply.
VP of Advertising
Will direct and compile the advertising staff, be responsible for making business contacts, obtaining at least 2-3 ads for the monthly printed magazine, set ad prices and sales packages and work in tandem with the PR team. Submit a cover letter and resume to apply.
Section Editors
University Editor
The university editor is in charge of the featured articles that fall under the ‘University’ heading of the magazine. Generally, this includes editing 2 feature-length per issue and one online article. Duties include reporting to editor planning meetings to generate story ideas for section and communicate story selections and angles to writers in a cheat sheet. Responsible for giving updates of staffers’ progress, giving writers, other editors and photographers timely feedback, editing stories for content, clarity and style. Ability to communicate effectively and reliably through email is important, and ideal candidate is organized, takes initiative and is responsive to both writers and editors. Knowledge of AP style and basic journalistic standards is highly recommended. Submit a cover letter, resume, and two writing samples to apply.
Special Sections Editor
Responsible for editing content in the Bell to Well section of the magazine, which includes two 300-word feature stories and one 300-word alumnus profile. Must attend monthly planning meeting to brainstorm and select stories appropriate for section and communicate story idea, angle and potential sources to writer. Responsible for editing section stories each month for content and clarity. Ability to communicate effectively and reliably through email is important and ideal candidate is organized, takes initiative and is responsive to both writers and editors. Columns Editor
Manage the writers under the Columns heading in the magazine. Duties include reporting to editor planning meetings to generate story ideas and helping columnists generate new topics. Editorials Editor
Editorials editor is responsible for editing the editorials and working with the writers on the Two Views, Carolina Legacy and Question of the Month editorials once a month. Staff Positions
Writers
Interview and research campus events and people to write an article on select topics once a month. Discovering a unique angle and revealing the personal behind the topic is crucial. Submit a cover letter, resume and two writing samples to apply.
Columnist
The ideal candidate for a columnist position will be able to write with a strong personal voice on a topic of their choice in each issue. Columns are typically 700 words and those interested in applying should include two writing samples. All applying should be sure to check out past columns to get an idea of what Blue & White columns are like and prepare a list of proposed topics that their column could focus on. Sports Columnist
Will write a column discussing a relevant sports topic, of their choice, each month. Typical columns are 700 words and those wishing to apply should submit, in addition to the cover letter and resume, two writing samples which demonstrate their personal voice.
Photographers
Work with writers once a month, taking photos which represent the subject of the article and people interviewed for the article. Creativity and teamwork, therefore, are highly encouraged. In addition, one photo each month will be chosen to be the cover article. Submit a cover letter, resume and two photo samples to apply.
Bloggers
Will be responsible for writing for our blog, http://blueandwhitemag.com/blog/. Applicants who are also interested in writing will have the opportunity to write stories for the magazine. Submit a cover letter, resume and two writing samples to apply.
PR staff
Is responsible for publicizing and distributing the magazine each month, attending events to recruit new staff members and finding new ways to introduce the magazine to students. Submit a cover letter and resume to apply.
